This book is an invaluable part of our Conservancy library. My only wish is for a full color companion book of photos of the plants.
"garden gods and bibles"
Written By: B. Vaughn
The Manuel for Woody Landscape Plants is my garden bible and Michael Dirr is my garden god. What is particularly enjoyable about this comprehensive book is that Dirr gives not only the customary positive reviews of the plants he likes, he doesn't hold back the criticisms of the badly behaving or just plain ugly plants that he doesn't. I don't buy anything without first consulting Dirr. Due to this book my 3 year-old yard contains very unusual, very lovely trees and plants, and because they are properly situated and sited, I look forward to enjoying them for many, many years. I do hope that a new edition is in the works so that I may select even more.
"Excellent reference"

Very good information on the woody plants that we use in the United States. Very good descriptions, sometimes with helpful illustrations (of leaves, branches, etc.) are a huge help in understanding and identifying woody landscape materials.

Book is easy to use. Dirr's format is easy to follow. Both Scientific and Common name indexes allow for a quick find.
